When Carl Zeiss and Ernst Abbe began constructing their microscopic lenses in 1866, they simultaneously formed an important branch of science and business, which had a huge impact on the centuries to come. Up until now, Jena has been an internationally renowned centre for optics and photonics. In the framework of the UNESCO International Year of Light 2015, the city of light Jena seeks to promote the public and politic understanding of the importance of light for our modern society.

Light is an essential medium in the research at the tradition steeped Friedrich-Schiller-University Jena, the Ernst-Abbe University of Applies Sciences and numerous non-university research facilities, as are the technological innovations of leading companies like ZEISS, Jenoptik and SCHOTT. Many up and coming Start-ups from the city of lights take on global challenges in energy, communication and healthcare and their experimentation contributes to the sustainable development of our digitalised world. The notion city of light stands in as a synonym for everything that made Jena what it is today: the inspiration of its bright minds, the light of enlightenment, the scientific institutions that constantly bring the light of revelation into the darkness, the world-famous high-technology companies and the young businesses, for whom light is the resource of success.

Optical technologies such as sensor-, image processing, measuring and communication technologies from Jena are deployed on daily basis throughout the globe; these light impulses build the framework of the internet. They facilitate mobile telecommunication and lay the cornerstones of our information society. Electromagnetic radiation, of which only a part is perceptible as light overcomes long distances and is ignorant of geographical borders.

CITY VISIONS Festival invites everyone to a light parcours elaborating on these scientific-technological innovations from Jena with artistic light installations in the urban environment. Light will be used as a medium for information and real-time communication and to visualizes the complex interplay of technological systems within our invisible ‘hybrid city’.

In thematic year ‚Jena 2015. Romance. Light. Infinity.‘ CITY VISIONS transfers the radiance of romanticism for Jena and Thuringa to the digital era. In the romantic tradition CITY VISONS seeks to generate new interdisciplinary cooperations projects on the intersection of science, business and art, using light based infrastructure to put forth awareness of the digitalisation in our everyday life and within our cities and to foster translocal encounters between people in Jena and its chinese partner city Panyu / Guangzhou. Jenas partner city Panyu / Guangzhou  is part of the chinese province Guangdong and a distinguished location of industry and trading: The majority of LED products and innovative electronic communication devices are produced here.

CITY VISIONS strives to reflect and design Jena as a city of light for the benefit of the citizens and the region and to engage in an techno-economical and cultural exchange with its chinese partner city in Panyu / Guangzhou.
