CITY CULTURE SCIENCE LAB @ Guangzhou // 24.-26. Juni 2015

About INVISIBLE and VISIBLE Cities

Throughout the world, the city of light Jena is acknowledged for the production of sensors, lenses, glass and light technologies that are applied in medicine, transportation, automatised control systems and in mobile communication: integrated technology increasingly determines our urban life. Especially in Jena, a globally renowned center for optic technologies and research, conditions and possibilities of the dynamic media technology developments take shape.

The artistic positions reflect upon the interplay of the ‚digital citizen‘ in the ‚hybrid city‘ within the tension-filled area of translocality. CITY VISIONS JENA artistic scenarios pick up these perspectives as established by the artists and push them further realising projects with Universities from the region (among others Bauhaus-University Weimar, Friedrich-Schiller-University Jena, University Leipzig), the Connecting Cities Network, and newly established connections, making them accessible to the broader public within the urban space. As a medium for information and interaction, light will be at the core of CITY VISIONS JENA artistic expressions.

Invisible Technology
We track and we are tracked constantly. Often unbeknownst to us, we interact with the digital infrastructures in our ‚Smart Cities‘ that are embedded in our daily life. What does monitoring and sensor technologies stand for in our society? How can we actively use DIY technologies to co-design our daily life routines and our city infrastructures?

Invisible Data Flows
Technical interfaces and sensor networks generate a vast amount of invisible data. In an artistic sense CITY VISIONS JENA unfolds around the juxtaposition of unperceivable data generated by massive digital infrastructures and data actively and collectively produced and managed in crowdsourcing systems. New forms of generating data evolve, stressing patterns of behaviour (energy and water consumption, shopping, mobility etc.) and environment (weather, air quality etc.) and providing a deep insight in the complex interplay of humans in and with the ‚hybrid city‘.

Invisible Cultures
Interaction, participation and communication are keywords in the arts discourse of the 20th century. It is mostly about the notion of the ‚open artwork‘, that, through the use of new media technology, sets off dynamic real-time processes. The international Connecting Cities Network seeks to connect geographically distant people and cities building on interactive socio-cultural scenarios and enable a dialogue between them.

Connecting Cities

In cooperation with the Connecting Cities Network CITY VISIONS JENA creates participative light installations, that open up windows into Jenas chinese partner city Guangzhou / Panyu and into Ruhr area. The Connecting Cities partner Urbane Künste Ruhr hosts the event ‚Urban Lights Ruhr‘ under the artistic direction of Katja Aßmann. Connecting Cities is an artistic research project supported by the European Union exploring the potential of urban media technologies to connect cities. It poses the question how we can turn projection surfaces, urban screens and media facades to resonant membranes or windows between cultures? And, within an international context, how far do they allow us to look? Connecting Cities is initiated by Public Art Lab in cooperation with 12 european and 6 international cities who have all dedicated the year 2015 to the topic of ‚Invisible and Visible Cities‘. In exchange with Jenas chinese partner city Guangzhou / Panyu Public Art Lab will bring the most interesting projects to Jena and present them at the Translocal Marketplace.
